V&A launch weird and wonderful exhibition

Power Of Making is inspired by craft

Question: Where can you find a crocheted bear, a gorilla constructed entirely from coat hangers and a baby made of marzipan? Answer: at the V&A's brand new Power Of Making exhibition.

The exhibition - launched in conjunction with the Craft Council, and which the museum describes as 'eclectic' - features these and many other unsusal creations, such as a lion-shaped Ghanian coffin and an individually handcrafts puppet from the 2009 film Fantastic Mr Fox.
The exhibition aims to show how materials can be used in ‘imaginative and spectacular ways’ and to encourage visitors to ‘consider the process of making as well as the results’.
Curator Daniel Charny said, “This exhibition celebrates the importance of traditional and time-honoured ways of making but also highlights the extraordinary innovation taking place around the world. We aim to show how the act of making in its various forms, from human expression to practical problem solving, is shared by all. We hope the exhibition will inspire people and cause them to more thoughtfully consider the role of making in their lives, in their society, in commerce and in education.”
Initial reviews have called the exhibition ‘ingenious and exciting’, with The Telegraph also describing it as ‘plain random’.
The exhibition is free, and is open daily from 10am to 17.45, and until 22.00 every Friday until the 2 January 2012. Visit vam.ac.uk for more information.
