You'd be forgiven for thinking that just about every native Australian animal is venomous, but here's some good news - echidnas are venom-free!

Male echidnas have a hollow spur on the back of one of their hind legs that secretes a kind of waxy substance. For years researchers have suspected that these spurs were used as weapons, and that the secretion was venomous, because their close relative, the platypus, also has spurs on the back of the male's hind limbs, which they use to jab venom into rival males during the mating season. But Australian researchers have discovered that the echidna's waxy secretions, which are produced by glands behind the spur, are not venomous, and are used to create scent markings so they can communicate non-violently with their peers during the mating season.

Peripheral drift illusion

Nope, this isn't an animated GIF. Known as a peripheral drift illusion, the image showcases the rapid movements of our eyes (called saccades), which occur constantly, even when we think our eyes are still.

Only animal known to plate itself with METAL

This little guy on the left is the iron sulphide secreting scaly-foot gastropod. It's the only animal known to plate itself with METAL and lives in a thermal vent deep in the ocean. But last year scientists found a pale, genetically identical version of the species (on the right) that doesn't secrete metal, leading scientists to question what the purpose of the armour really is.

About nanoparticles and nanocrystals.

This is the Lycurgus Cup. It was made 1700 year ago by skilled Roman craftsmen, and now researchers are studying it to understand a bit more about nanoparticles and nanocrystals. The cup is made of glass that changes colour from red to green depending on whether light is being reflected off it or shining through it.

I Am Curious (Yellow)

I Am Curious (Yellow) (1967) - Plot Summary Poster

 Challenged U.S. Censorship Laws

Lena, aged twenty, wants to know all she can about life and reality. She collects information on everyone and everything, storing her findings in an enormous archive. She experiments with relationships, political activism, and meditation.

Meanwhile, the actors, director and crew are shown in a humorous parallel plot about the making of the film and their reactions to the story and each other. Nudity, explicit sex, and controversial politics kept this film from being shown in the US while its seizure by Customs was appealed.
