PAPER SCULPTURES (Chinese paper sculptures stretch imaginations in New York)

Published on Jan 23, 2014

The line of pure white busts sitting amongst the dust in Li Hongbo's Beijing studio could be found in any art classroom around the world.

That is until the 38-year-old Chinese artist places his hands on one, lifts gently, and what had seemed like solid plaster transforms into a live, amorphous mass.

A roman soldier stretches like elastic, a pretty English maid suddenly rises like a terrible phantasm. They are neither plaster nor clay, but concertinas of thousands of fine pieces of paper.

"At the beginning, I discovered the flexible nature of paper through Chinese paper toys and paper lanterns.

Later, I used this to make a gun. A gun is solid, used for killing, but I turned it into a tool for play or for decoration. In this way, it lost both the form of a gun, and the culture inherent to a gun. It became a game," he said.

To make his sculptures Li uses a stencil to paste glue in narrow strips across large pieces of paper that he then sticks together to form blocks of 500.

He stacks the blocks to the desired height -- an average bust is over ten blocks or 5,000 sheets of paper high -- then cuts, chisels and sands the large block just as if it were a piece of soft stone.

Born into a simple farming family, Li said he has always loved paper, first invented in ancient China. He has spent six years producing a collection of books recording more than 1,000 years of Buddhist art on paper.

In his recent works, Li has consciously produced only perfect replicas of classical busts and shapes he used to sketch at university. The denatured human forms may make some people squirm, but Li says he uses the archetypal figures to make audiences concentrate on the material, not to shock.

"'Strange' and 'unsettling' are just adjectives used by some individuals.

In fact, people have a fixed understanding of what a human is, and think that a human cannot be physically manipulated, so when you transform a person, people will reconsider the nature of objects and the motivation behind the creation. This is what I care about," he said.

His exhibition 'Tools of Study' at the Klein Sun gallery in New York has earned him plenty of attention across the Pacific since it opened on January 9th.

Gallery assistants pull the twenty pieces around on their plinths for visitors, but not being allowed to touch pieces themselves leaves some feeling unfulfilled.

Li is aware of this irony, and at a show in Sydney provided small models for the audience to play with. But it could be for the best.

The Junky's Christmas (1993)

Runtime: 21 min

Color: Black and White

Director: Nick Donkin & Melodie McDaniel
Cast: William S. Burroughs ... Narrator (voice)

Description: Burroughs takes down a book and reads us the story of Danny the Carwiper, who spends Christmas Day trying to score a fix, but finds the Christmas spirit instead.
Francis Ford Coppola produced this short Claymation film based on William S. Burroughs excellent story The Junky's Christmas. Directed by Nick Donkin and Melodie McDaniel, it opens with live action footage of Burroughs as he begins his tale:

It was Christmas Day and Danny the Car Wiper hit the street junksick and broke after seventy-two hours in the precinct jail. It was a clear bright day, but there was warmth in the sun. Danny shivered with an inner cold. He turned up the collar of his worn, greasy black overcoat. This beat benny wouldn't pawn for a deuce, he thought.

A history of slutty costumes

Halloween was about sex before it was about "trick or treat." A history of slutty costumes:

Man tries to recycle human skulls

skulls

A man tried to recycle skulls by tossing them into a pile of recyclable materials via the junk removal service company that he works for. When the skulls arrived at a garbage transfer station in Connecticut, an employee saw them and phoned police. According to SF Gate, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that the skulls were human. Police are now working to figure out where the skulls may have come from.

“We are trying to determine whether they came from a grave robbery, if they were bought online or something more sinister,” Stamford police Lt. Diedrich Hohn said.

The man who recycled the skulls may have thought that they were plastic — at least that’s the theory of solid waste supervisor Dan Colleluori.

The man was cleaning out the home of another man who had recently passed away when he came across the items and put them in a pile of recyclables, evidently not thinking that they were real.

Police have already contacted the deceased man’s family in an effort to solve the mystery - the father of the deceased man said the skulls were purchased by his late son online for more than $1,000 apiece from a website that sells skulls, skeletons and other anatomical items.”

The man’s dad seemed happy that the skulls were removed but is cooperating with police by telling them everything that he knows about where his son got the skulls and what they were used for.

“He would have them on display in the living room, and I’m glad that they’re gone now,” dead man’s dad said.

JOAN FONTCUBERTA: STRANGER THAN FICTION

Photography is a tool to negotiate our idea of reality. Thus it is the responsibility of photographers to not contribute with anaesthetic images but rather to provide images that shake consciousness.”

Stranger Than Fiction is our latest Media Space exhibition, open 23 July - 9 November 2014.
Book now: http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/stran...

Joan Fontcuberta's first major UK exhibition features six documentary narratives that combine reality and fiction. Using the visual languages of journalism, advertising, museum displays and scientific journals, these convincing yet subversive and deadpan works are an investigation into photography's authority and our inclination to believe what we see.

America's Rattiest Cities

Below is the full list of cities on Orkin’s ‘rattiest’ cities:
1. Chicago
2. Los Angeles
3. Washington, D.C.-Hagerstown
4. New York
5. San Francisco-Oak-San Jose
6. Seattle-Tacoma
7. Detroit
8. Cleveland-Akron-Canton
9. Baltimore
10. Miami-Ft. Lauderdale
11. Dallas-Ft. Worth
12. Denver
13. Houston
14. Atlanta
15. Boston-Manchester
16. Minneapolis-St. Paul
17. Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto
18. Syracuse
19. Indianapolis
20. Charlotte

Autumn is the time of year when rodents are actively seeking food, water and shelter in preparation for winter weather. Each fall, rats and mice invade an estimated 21 million American homes.
Orkin recommends the following tips to help prevent rodents around the home:
  • Regularly inspect the home – inside and outside – for rodent droppings, rub marks or burrows.
  • Seal all cracks and gaps around utility penetrations larger than 1/4 of an inch, as well as install weather stripping at the bottom of exterior doors.
  • Trim overgrown branches, plants and bushes near the home, and consider keeping a 2-foot barrier between any landscaping and the home.
  • Store all food (including pet food) and garbage properly in sealed containers both indoors and outdoors.
  • Remove all pet bowls after animals are finished eating, and remove pet waste from the lawn promptly.
