If you think this city has
changed a lot in the last ten years, you wouldn't believe how much it's changed since 1886. An anonymous collector recently made nearly 1,200 historical photos that were taken around the turn of the century available to the Western Neighborhoods Project, a nonprofit dedicated to sharing the history and culture of San Francisco's western neighborhoods. This unparalleled collection shows us a San Francisco that has not been seen in this much detail in more than a century.
San Francisco's history is intertwined with the history of photography. Nearly everything that has happened here from the Gold Rush through the 1906 earthquake has been documented on photographic plates and film. Ansel Adams himself was born and raised on 24th Avenue right here in the Richmond. Some of the highlights from the collection include a kid riding an alligator on Ocean Beach, dead whales and shipwrecks used as billboards for local businesses, a car race from City Hall to the beach, and snow falling on Ocean Beach in 1932.
