In 1969, upon their return from the Moon, the crew of Apollo 11 were quarantined in the Mobile Quarantine Facility, a modified airtight Airstream trailer, until it could be determined that there was little likelihood of their having brought back lunar pathogens with them.
For decades, NASA has used a fleet of Airstream motorhomes to transport astronauts to the launch pad. The space shuttle program has used a modified 1983 Airstream Excella since 1984 dubbed the Astrovan.

Airstream trailers are commonly used to transport American officials around the world. The trailers are strapped down inside military cargo planes. The trailers feature leather chairs, carpeting, wood panelling, television and DVD players.

Airstream is a brand of luxury recreational vehicle manufactured in Jackson Center, Ohio, USA. It is currently a division of Thor Industries. The company, which now employs fewer than 400, is the oldest in the industry. Airstream trailers are easily recognized for their distinctive rounded aluminum bodies, which originated in the 1930s from designs created by Hawley Bowlus. Bowlus was the chief designer of Charles Lindbergh's aircraft, the Spirit of St. Louis.
During World War II travel became a luxury that most could not afford. The Airstream has progressed to being one of the most well known trailers in the US. Mini made by BMW recently teamed up with Airstream to make a custom trailer to match a modified Mini Cooper. The combo was a fun with clean crisp design at heart. They were available in fresh colors and flower prints. The Airstream even had a built-in sun-bathing bed.
"The Airstreams legacy has lived through the past decades and will be around for many more to come. You have to admit, it’s hard to argue with something that has such clean lines and a beautiful silver shine. Getting older just means that you can finally afford to get an Airstream.

"This original 1959 Airstream found abandoned at a horse farm in California has been rescued and carefully restored into an amazing retro-chic mobile studio. The project was carried out by landscape architect Andreas Stavropoulos, who is also the founder of firm XS LAND and the co-founder of ChickenCribs.com. In an article he wrote for Dwell, he explains how it all started: “First came the idea. Then came the late nights of Craigslist searching. And then it happened quickly: a trip to a derelict horse ranch in the Salinas Valley, an exchange of cash in an old barn, and a harrowing towing adventure up Highway 101 netted me my current abode—a 1959 Airstream travel trailer”.
